Crown repair

The chimney crown, also referred to as the "chimney wash" or "splay", sits at the top of a masonry chimney. It covers and seals the top of the chimney from the flue tile (see below) to the chimney edge. The crown is necessary to keep rain out of the chimney chase.  Since this top component is the part that suffers the most to the elements, it is many times the first thing to deteriorate. A crown is also susceptible to moss (click here to see our page on moss removal), which will crack a crown and pull it apart with it's roots as it grows, as evident in these pictures below.

Once the crown goes, the mortar in the joints of the chimney, which are made of softer mortar, are more likely to deteriorate faster. (Click on image below)

We do poured and tooled sloped crowns to allow water runoff from the top of the chimney. We use a mixture of sand mix (which is much harder than mortar) and a bonding agent to create a tough, durable, and long lasting crown (Click the image below to see a larger version of the image)
